Free Code Editors and IDEs

Free is not the interesting question here — several of the most popular editors never charged. Two other layers are worth seeing clearly. One is telemetry: Microsoft's VS Code build collects usage data by default, while VSCodium, the community build of the same source, removes it. The other is commercial licensing: IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition is Apache-2.0 and needs no purchase for company use, which is regularly misunderstood. This list runs by entry cost, from writing code immediately to assembling your own configuration.

Selection Criteria

  • Core editing is entirely free, with no caps on project count or file size.
  • Whether commercial use requires a licence is stated per editor.
  • Telemetry behaviour is stated per editor, with defaults called out.
  • All core features work without registering an account.

FAQ

How do VS Code and VSCodium relate?
Two builds of the same open-source code. Microsoft's VS Code adds telemetry, Microsoft branding and some closed components on top, with usage data collection on by default (it can be turned off in settings). VSCodium builds from the same source with telemetry and branding removed and identical functionality. The trade is that it points at the open extension registry rather than Microsoft's, so a few Microsoft-only extensions — the remote development set among them — cannot be installed.
Can IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition be used at a company?
Yes. It is Apache-2.0 and commercial use requires no purchase. The difference from paid Ultimate is language and framework coverage: Community handles Java, Kotlin, Groovy, Scala with Maven and Gradle, which is enough for backend and Android work, while Ultimate adds web front-end, Spring, database tooling and deeper framework support. For pure Java or Kotlin, Community is a complete IDE.
Is Zed worth switching to?
It depends what you value. Zed is rewritten in Rust with noticeably lower startup and input latency than the Electron generation, it does not stall on large files, and collaborative editing and AI integration are built in. Its extension ecosystem is far smaller than VS Code's and toolchain support for some languages is still filling in. Worth trying for mainstream languages without exotic plugin dependencies; check for an equivalent first if you rely heavily on a particular VS Code extension.
Neovim or Helix?
Helix works out of the box — syntax highlighting, LSP completion and multiple cursors are built in and no config file is needed to start. Neovim expects you to build a configuration or adopt a distribution, but its plugin ecosystem is an order of magnitude larger and almost any need has been met by someone. Take Helix to start immediately, Neovim to trade time for total control. Both are modal editors with Vim-style keys.
Just editing a config file or reading a log?
Notepad++ on Windows — fast to start, light, with syntax highlighting and large file support. A twenty-year-old tool, and no reason to open a full IDE to change three lines.
