Free Screen Recording and Screenshot Tools

Free screen recorders usually impose three things: a watermark in the corner that cannot be removed, a five- or ten-minute cap per recording, and a sign-up at export time. None of those are technical constraints; they are product decisions. Everything here produces a clean original file. The list follows the workflow in three stages — recording, screenshot and annotation, then trimming and transcoding afterwards.

Selection Criteria

  • Output carries no watermark.
  • No cap on recording length or number of recordings.
  • Recording and export work without an account.
  • Processing is local; nothing recorded gets uploaded.

FAQ

What should I record a lesson or a demo with?
OBS Studio. It was built for live streaming and recording to a local file comes along with that, which is why its encoding, multi-track audio and scene switching outclass dedicated recorders. Screen, webcam and microphone record to separate tracks for adjustment afterwards. Configuring a scene on first launch is its only barrier.
I just want a screenshot with an arrow on it.
ShareX on Windows, Flameshot on Linux. ShareX is very broad — capture, annotation, GIF recording, OCR, automatic upload, with shortcuts and workflows tunable in detail. Flameshot is tighter: select a region and the annotation tools appear beside it, so arrows, blurring and text happen in one motion.
I only need to trim the start and end without re-encoding.
LosslessCut. It neither decodes nor re-encodes, cutting on keyframes instead, so a few hundred megabytes take a second or two with zero quality loss. The trade is that cuts land on keyframes rather than exact frames. Frame-accurate work needs a real editor.
What is FFmpeg doing on this list?
Format conversion, size reduction, extracting audio, changing resolution — and screen recording itself. It is a command-line tool, and it is usually what sits underneath the GUI applications above. A file too large for an upload limit, a MOV that needs to be an MP4, a video you want only the audio from: one command each.
