Free Task and Time Tracking Tools

Free tiers in task software restrict along fixed lines: a cap on tasks, reminders behind payment, attachment size limits, and an upgrade prompt past three collaborators. None of it is expensive individually, and together it is enough to extract an annual payment. Everything here is either fully local or self-hostable, with no task cap and no per-seat billing. The list sorts four ways — personal tasks, team boards, habits and time statistics.

FAQ

Which one for personal use?
Super Productivity. Tasks, a Pomodoro timer and time statistics in one application — starting a task starts the clock, and at the end of the day you can see where the time actually went. No subscription, data stored locally, and issue sync with Jira, GitHub and GitLab. For freelancers billing by project, its statistics are directly usable.
Vikunja or Wekan?
Vikunja's distinguishing feature is viewing the same tasks as a list, a kanban board, a Gantt chart or a calendar, switching as needed without maintaining two systems. Wekan is a self-hosted Trello with pure kanban logic and cards you drag, which costs a team essentially nothing to pick up. Both are self-hosted and want a machine that stays on.
Any habit tracker without notifications or fees?
Loop Habit Tracker. Android habit tracking that is fully offline, ad-free, free and account-free. It computes a habit strength score from your history rather than resetting on a missed day, which matches how habits actually behave better than an unbroken-streak counter.
What does ActivityWatch do?
It records where your time went automatically — which programs ran, which windows were focused, which sites were visited — producing a time distribution report with no manual start and stop. The point is that not a byte is uploaded and everything stays on the machine. Tools like this are common in workplace monitoring, but those report to a manager; this one reports to you.
