AltTab
FreeWindows-style Alt-Tab, brought over to macOS intact
Replaces macOS window switching with a per-window one. The built-in ⌘Tab switches applications, counting five windows of the same app as one; AltTab switches windows, showing a live thumbnail for each, filterable by display or space, with configurable shortcuts and appearance.
Why we picked it
GPL-3.0, 16,300 stars.
⌘Tab only shows its problem once you keep many windows: three Finder windows, four browser windows, two terminals, and ⌘Tab hands you three icons, after which you still ⌘` through them one at a time. AltTab lists every window separately with a live thumbnail, so one press lands where you meant.
Adoption is high among people arriving from Windows or Linux, because in their muscle memory "switch window" was always per-window.
To be clear about:
- It needs both Accessibility and Screen Recording permission — a thumbnail is, mechanically, a capture of another app's window.
- It complements Rectangle rather than overlapping: one arranges, the other finds. Running both is fine.
