Cemu
FreeWii U games at 4K and 60 fps
A Wii U emulator, open-sourced in 2022 with Linux support added. With community graphic packs, games originally at 720p or 1080p and 30 fps can run at higher resolutions and frame rates. It supports Vulkan and OpenGL, works with ordinary controllers, and shows the GamePad screen in a separate window. Games must be dumped from your own Wii U.
Why we picked it
MPL-2.0, 9,867 stars as of September 2026.
Cemu was closed-source freeware for years and went open source with version 2.0 in August 2022, gaining a native Linux build at the same time. The Wii U sold poorly, but its library includes games that were never ported or whose ports cost money again, and Cemu is the main way to play them on a computer.
Its most practical effect comes from graphic packs, a community-maintained set of patches you download inside Cemu and tick per game: resolution to 1440p or 4K, frame rate unlocked from 30 to 60, letterboxing removed in some titles, antialiasing adjusted. Game files are untouched, and unticking restores the original.
The Wii U GamePad has its own screen; Cemu shows it in a separate window and mouse clicks stand in for touch. Ordinary gamepads and the Switch Pro Controller can be mapped, and motion controls are supported.
To be clear about:
- Without a Wii U there is no legitimate way to use it. Games must be dumped from your own console. The setup guide says it directly: without a Wii U you cannot dump games and therefore cannot use Cemu. Dumping does not permanently modify the console; the official guide uses tools such as Dumpling.
- Online play needs account data exported from the console, and the native Linux and macOS builds do not support it. The guide suggests Linux users who want online play run the Windows build through Wine or Lutris.
- Compatibility on macOS is poor, especially on Apple Silicon.
- Stable releases are slow. The latest stable is 2.6 from February 2025 with none since, though the repository is still receiving commits as of September 2026. Development builds for newer fixes are available from GitHub Actions.
- On GPUs, the official notes say Intel graphics support is limited and Vulkan is recommended there; cards with less than 2 GB of VRAM should use OpenGL.
