FreeThe community fork of Organic Maps — same code, not-for-profit governance
An offline maps app forked from Organic Maps and sharing its lineage — OpenStreetMap data, maps stored on the device, fully offline search and navigation, no personal data collected. The difference is governance, being community-led and explicitly not-for-profit, with the code hosted on Codeberg.
Why we picked it
Apache-2.0, code on Codeberg, on F-Droid since June 2025 and on Play and the App Store since July.
This is the same map engine written by the same people, tracing back through Organic Maps to Maps.ME. Nothing feels missing: offline search, route planning, voice guidance and outdoor paths are all here.
The split was about governance. The April 2025 open letter argued that Organic Maps was community-driven in name while commercial partnerships, spending and the introduction of closed-source components were decided by a small group of shareholders, with donations unaccounted for. Negotiation failed, the contributors left with the Apache-2.0 code, and the community voted on the name and the accent colour.
It adds a Linux desktop build on Flathub, which Organic Maps does not have.
To be clear about:
- The two projects overlap heavily today. Pick one; there is no reason to run both.
- Not-for-profit means no commercial revenue, so long-term maintenance rests on donations and volunteers. That is a real variable, not a slogan.
