Cromite
FreeA Chromium fork for Android with ad blocking built in
A Chromium fork with ad and tracker blocking built in, Google service connections and telemetry stripped out, and privacy patches such as fingerprint randomisation and per-site permission controls. Android is the main target, with Windows and Linux builds also provided.
Why we picked it
GPL-3.0, 8,238 stars.
Installing a blocker on Android has narrowed since 2024: mobile Chrome never supported extensions, and Manifest V3 weakened blocking extensions where they do run. Cromite builds blocking into the browser itself rather than into an extension, so the MV3 constraints do not apply to it.
It took over from Bromite. After Bromite stopped updating in late 2022, the community continued from its patch set under the Cromite name, rebasing the patches onto upstream Chromium as it moves.
To be clear about:
- Not on the Play Store. The APK comes from the official site or F-Droid; check the signature.
- Desktop builds exist, but Windows and Linux have far more choice already — Brave, LibreWolf and Ungoogled Chromium are all in this directory. Its value is mainly on Android.
- Sync and password management are your problem, since it does not connect to a Google account. That is both the point and the inconvenience.
