GCompris

Free

Nearly two hundred learning activities for ages 2 to 10, with no ads and no in-app purchases

Open Source No Ads No Tracking Offline No Sign-up Cross-platform

A collection of educational activities for children aged 2 to 10, maintained by the KDE community. Version 26.0 ships 197 activities covering computer basics, mouse and keyboard skills, reading, arithmetic, science, geography, logic games and Braille. Everything runs offline with no account, and a companion app, GCompris-teachers, is available for classrooms.

Why we picked it

AGPL-3.0, with the code hosted on KDE's own GitLab. The project has been going since 2000, and version 26.2 came out on 23 September 2026.

Children's learning apps tend to share the same problems: ads, in-app purchases and "watch one more video to unlock the next level". GCompris has none of that. Once installed every activity is available, it works without a network connection, and there is no account system. Parents can hand over a tablet or an old laptop without worrying about it.

Activities are grouped by category. The youngest children start with clicking and arrow keys; older ones do arithmetic, read clocks, spot patterns, solve puzzles and play simple board games, and there are geography puzzles plus science demonstrations such as electric circuits and the water cycle. The interface is fully translated into 26 languages and partly into 19 more, and some activities include voice.

Since 26.0 there is also GCompris-teachers, a companion app for teachers running GCompris in a classroom. It is available for Windows and Linux and suits a school computer room.

To be clear about:

  • macOS lags behind. The latest release has no macOS build; the site offers the old 4.3 version. Linux, Windows, Android and Raspberry Pi all get current releases.
  • There is no iOS version.
  • Before February 2020 the Windows and macOS builds required a small payment to unlock every activity, and you may still find that mentioned online. Today it is free on every platform.
  • The artwork is plain compared with commercial children's apps. Whether that matters depends on the child.
