Karakeep
FreeA self-hosted bookmark vault that keeps the page, not a link that will rot
A self-hosted bookmarking and read-it-later service. Saving a page stores the article text, a screenshot and optionally a full archive, so the content survives the original going away. It offers full-text search, tags and lists, browser extensions and mobile apps, and optional LLM-assisted auto-tagging.
Why we picked it
AGPL-3.0, 29,100 stars. Formerly Hoarder, renamed in 2025.
The trouble with browser bookmarks is that they store only an address. Open them three years later and half are 404s while the other half have been rewritten. Karakeep pulls the article text on save, takes a screenshot, and optionally keeps a full archive, so the original disappearing does not take your copy with it.
Full-text search is where it beats a bookmark folder: you cannot remember which folder it went in, but you remember a phrase inside it, and searching finds it.
Auto-tagging can call an LLM, including a local Ollama — also listed here. Skipping it leaves manual tagging, which is not a degraded mode.
Wallabag, in this directory, does something similar with a reading focus. Karakeep leans toward collecting and retrieval, with stronger image and full-page archiving.
To be clear about:
- You deploy it yourself, as a Docker compose set.
- Full-page archives consume disk quickly; watch space past a few thousand entries.
- AGPL means modifying the code and offering it as a service carries source obligations.
