FreeClipboard history for macOS — ⇧⌘C brings back what you copied
A menu-bar clipboard history that records copied text and images and brings them back through a searchable shortcut. The retention count and duration are configurable, sensitive sources such as password managers can be ignored, and everything stays on the machine.
Why we picked it
MIT-licensed, 21,600 stars.
The macOS clipboard holds one item; overwrite it and it is gone. This is the kind of tool nobody thinks about until the day they lose something, after which it gets installed immediately. Windows has had Win+V built in; macOS still has not.
It keeps its scope narrow: clipboard history only — not a launcher, not a notes app, not an extension platform. Small, fast to start, light on memory. Search is fuzzy, so a few letters find the config snippet you copied three hours ago.
Sensitive data has a switch: ignore by application, so adding 1Password or Bitwarden keeps passwords out of the history entirely. Data stays local, with no sync and no upload.
To be clear about:
- macOS only.
- The feature set is deliberately small. Clipboard plus launcher plus window management in one app is a different tool's job.
