Why we picked it
Discord is convenient, but it is one company's service: it wants an account, it analyzes your data, your voice goes through its servers, and it can change the rules at any time. Mumble is the other road — you run the server. BSD-licensed, going on twenty years old, and still the standard answer among competitive gamers and radio hobbyists.
Latency is its hard metric. Mumble uses Opus and is heavily tuned for low delay; in practice it generally feels tighter than mainstream voice apps, which matters for games that demand precise coordination and for remote band rehearsals. Positional audio is the other signature feature: in supported games, a teammate's voice comes from where they actually are.
Two things you have to accept. First, you need a server. The server component (murmur) is tiny — the cheapest cloud VM, an old PC or a Raspberry Pi will do — but the step is unavoidable, though you can also join a public server someone else runs. Second, the interface is plain. It is engineer aesthetics: no community features, no stickers, no video, just a clean channel tree and permission management.
Who it suits: anyone who wants a permanent voice channel with minimal latency that no company's policy change can touch. If you want community features and an all-in-one experience, something like Discord fits better — but that leaves the free-and-untracked category entirely.
