Nginx Proxy Manager
FreeReverse proxies and certificates set up by clicking, without touching an Nginx config
A web interface on top of Nginx. Create a reverse proxy by typing a domain and a backend address in the browser, request a Let's Encrypt certificate with one click and have it renew automatically, and add access control lists, HTTP basic auth or custom Nginx snippets. It deploys as Docker with a single compose file.
Why we picked it
MIT-licensed, 34,200 stars.
It solves the same problem as Caddy from the opposite direction. Caddy has you write a very short config file; Nginx Proxy Manager has you write none — everything goes into a web form.
A NAS at home running Jellyfin, Immich, Home Assistant and Uptime Kuma — all in this directory — means one port per service. Giving each a domain and a certificate is four new records in this interface, with certificate status and expiry visible in one table.
To be clear about:
- The admin interface needs protecting. It ships with an administrator account, and it does not belong on the public internet.
- Docker is the only deployment method. Without Docker this is not for you.
- Complex cases — fine-grained rate limiting, involved rewrites — still end in a custom Nginx snippet. The GUI does not cover everything.
