Open-source kart racing, up to eight players on one screen

Open Source No Ads No Tracking Offline No Sign-up Cross-platform

An open-source 3D kart racer starring Tux, the Linux penguin. Modes include story, Grand Prix, time trial, soccer, battle and egg hunt; up to eight people can play split-screen on one computer, with LAN and online play as well. Version 1.5 has 18 official karts and 21 official tracks, plus hundreds of community add-ons.

Why we picked it

Code is GPL-3.0-or-later; art assets are a mix of GPL, CC-BY, CC-BY-SA and public domain. 5,373 stars as of September 2026, with the current stable release, 1.5, published in October 2025.

It plays like Mario Kart: pick up items on the track, fire bowling balls, cakes and bubble gum at rivals, and spin out when you get hit. It is quick to learn; a child with a controller gets it within minutes.

It is best as a multiplayer game on one computer. Up to eight people can play split-screen with a few controllers plugged in, no extra devices and no internet. Other modes:

  • Story mode: challenge races ending against the villain Nolok, unlocking karts and tracks.
  • Soccer and battle: team-based goal scoring, or attacking each other with items, livelier than straight racing.
  • Egg hunt: explore tracks for hidden eggs, good for children who do not want to race.
  • Time trial: no items, pure driving.
  • Add-ons: hundreds of community karts and tracks download inside the game.

To be clear about:

  • Internet play needs an STK account. Single-player, split-screen and LAN need none; only joining servers on the internet requires registering in the game.
  • Donors get extra tracks. A donation of $5 or more unlocks two tracks made for the next generation of the game (Drainage Dash and Freytra Peaks). It is a donor reward and does not leave the regular game incomplete; the official blog says Freytra Peaks will join the main game with Evolution, so donors are getting it early.
  • The next generation is in progress. In August 2025 the team announced "SuperTuxKart Evolution", with new tracks, karts, powerups and reworked graphics, and no release date yet.
  • Graphics are at open-source-game level, not a commercial blockbuster's. Besides Windows, macOS and Linux, there is an official Android package, an iOS version on the App Store and a homebrew build for the Switch.
