- Which should a beginner install?
- InvokeAI. The GUI is complete and behaves like real image software, it is actively maintained, and there are no node graphs to learn. Move to ComfyUI later if you need more control.
- Everyone recommends Stable Diffusion WebUI — why call it unmaintained?
- Read the commit history rather than the repo page. The last code commit was 27 July 2024, the last release v1.10.1 shipped in February 2025, and 2,502 issues are open. The newer timestamp on the repo page reflects branch pushes, not development. It is not archived and still generates images, but support for new models and GPUs is not coming.
- What hardware do I need?
- The tools themselves are small; models take the space. An SDXL base model is typically around 6 GB, and with VAEs, LoRAs and upscalers a working set of well over 10 GB is normal. 8 GB of VRAM or more is advisable; below that you rely on low-VRAM modes and speed drops noticeably. CPU-only works but takes minutes to tens of minutes per image.
