An AGPL-3.0 local AI image front end with 164,499 stars — the most-starred and most-tutorialed project in the space. It is however no longer maintained: the last code commit was 27 July 2024, the last release v1.10.1 in February 2025, and 2,502 issues sit open. It still runs, but support for new models and new hardware is not coming.
Why we picked it
This is the default recommendation in most tutorials, at 164,499 stars, AGPL-3.0. It is also the one whose status most needs stating up front.
It is no longer maintained. The last code commit was 27 July 2024, the last release v1.10.1 landed in February 2025, and 2,502 issues remain open. The "updated" date on the repo page reflects branch pushes, not development — you have to read the commit history to see it.
The repo is not archived and it still generates images today. But adaptation to new models, features and GPUs is not coming. Anyone still following two-year-old tutorials to install it deserves to know.
For maintained alternatives: ComfyUI (node-based, most capable) or InvokeAI (GUI, easiest start).
