Free System Cleanup and Productivity Utilities
"System optimisation" is the dirtiest phrase in consumer software. The routine is a scan producing red warnings about 3,847 problems, a membership prompt when you click repair, and a browser extension plus a few bundled extras on the way out. Genuinely useful utilities never behave like that — each solves one concrete problem: this one launches programs from a hotkey, that one shows what filled the disk, another keeps everything you copied. This list sorts five ways — launching and input, cleanup and analysis, archiving, backup, and package management.

Selection Criteria
- Invents no problems and sells no "acceleration", "optimisation" or "deep clean".
- The installer bundles nothing and does not change your browser homepage or default search.
- No ad slots in the interface and no account required.
- Solves one concrete problem rather than stacking features into a suite.

FAQ
- What goes on a new machine first?
- Three kinds — Flow Launcher, Ditto, and an archiver such as 7-Zip or PeaZip. Flow Launcher opens programs, finds files, does arithmetic and looks things up from a hotkey, removing the trip through the start menu. Ditto keeps clipboard history so an overwritten copy is recoverable. An archiver is a necessity, and choosing an open-source one avoids bundles and ads.
- How do I find what filled the disk?
- WinDirStat draws a treemap where each file occupies area proportional to its size, so the folder or single file eating the space is immediately visible — usually caches, logs or a forgotten virtual machine image. For duplicates and near-identical photos use Czkawka, which compares by content hash rather than filename. For browser caches and usage traces use BleachBit, which deletes only what you tick and invents no problems.
- AutoHotkey or Espanso?
- AutoHotkey is a Windows automation language that binds any sequence of actions to a hotkey — remapping keys, batch clicking, controlling windows, building small tools — with a high ceiling and the cost of writing scripts. Espanso does one thing: type a few characters and they expand into a block of text, across Windows, macOS and Linux. For email templates, code snippets, addresses and phone numbers, Espanso is enough and needs no scripting.
- Is backup the same as sync?
- No, and conflating them is a common mistake. A sync tool such as Syncthing keeps both ends identical — delete a file by accident and it disappears on the other side too. A backup retains historical versions, so an accidental deletion or a ransomware encryption can be rolled back to a point in time. Kopia does encrypted, deduplicated incremental backups to a local disk, a NAS or object storage. You need both; neither substitutes for the other.
- Can I install Windows software without downloading installers one by one?
- UniGetUI puts a graphical interface over winget, Scoop and Chocolatey, so searching, installing, bulk updating and uninstalling happen in one window. Packages come from those official sources, which bypasses download sites with their bundles and ad-shaped buttons.
